2/14: Howard Zinn Memorial planning meeting

Howard Zinn inspired many throughout the movement for peace and social justice to raise our voices, speak out, and organize. Last Sunday a planning meeting was held to organize a celebration of his contributions as well as the causes that he supported.

We decided we would like to hold an activity on March 6 which would have an outdoor as well as indoor character. An activity where everyone was invited, a "peoples celebration" of sorts.

Our next planning meeting is scheduled for this Sunday at 12:30 pm to work through more of the details. Everyone is invited so please spread the word.

2/11: Gaza Freedom March Report-Back

Come hear the stories of eyewitness participants Sarah Roche-Mahdi, Emily King, and Becky Thompson.

The Gaza Freedom March brought together hundreds of people from 43 countries, including high-profile leaders, to challenge the inhumane and illegal siege on Gaza. Organized by the US-based CodePink and UK-based Viva Palestina, the march brought hundreds of people to Egypt to bring badly-needed humanitarian supplies to Gaza and march against the ongoing blockade of Gaza.

To our dismay the Egyptian authorities did not allow the march to proceed and activists scrambled to make their voices heard despite the overt repression. Come hear the personal accounts of their journey to Egypt with the Gaza Freedom March!

Despite a commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1970 to work toward disarmament, the United States stockpiles these weapons of mass destruction. Because of our illegal wars of aggression, tyrannical and unstable regimes around the world seek nuclear weapons as their only hope to deter the United States. Israel's nuclear weapons contribute to destabilizing the middle east. Please consider bringing messages to this DMZ to remember the 64th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and to call upon our government to dismantle these awful weapons once and for all.

6/23: Building an opposition to US wars in the era of the Obama administration

In a lopsided vote, the US House of Representatives on May 14, 2009 approved the Obama administration’s request for $97 billion for U.S. military operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Palestinians continue to suffer the devastating consequences of US support to the unending blockade of Gaza.

It is in this context that the National Assembly to End the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars and Occupations will be held July 10–12 to initiate an education and mass action campaign. We invite antiwar activists to consider how we can build a united movement that supports the various campaigns and actions of our local organizations. Join us in a discussion of strategy for building the antiwar movement locally, regionally, and nationally.
Everyone is welcome to come!

9/19: Boston De-Militarized Zone (DMZ)

Join the Socialist Party of Boston and the Stop the Wars Coalition on the third Friday of every month, 6-8 pm at the corner of Mass Ave. and Boylston St., to establish a De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) where all those who wish can congregate to denigrate and repudiate the war machine and celebrate the movement against war and oppression.

DMZ is our contribution to the Iraq Moratorium project, which complements large regional and national demonstrations with regular local actions, helping keep opposition to the war in Iraq alive and agitation against it active.

Bring your signs and minds, ready to chalk, talk, play music, paint art, and sing leftist songs with caring and sharing, in unity declaring that we are "chilling against the villins" in this zone to show our independence from the state.

8/23: Sacco and Vanzetti Commemoration

On Saturday, 23 August, we will join in marking the 81st anniversary of the execution of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, two Italian immigrants and committed anarchists whose trial is widely regarded as one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in American history.

To call attention to the continued repression of immigrants and radicals, we will join the Sacco and Vanzetti Commemoration Society (SVCS) in its third annual march and rally. The day's events begin with a 1 pm gathering in Copley Square, followed by a march to the North End at 3 pm, and concluding with a 5 pm rally at the Paul Revere Mall (416 Hanover St.), featuring a number of speakers, including Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner.
