In
Solidarity with the September 29th General Strike in Spain
Statement of the
SPUSA Labor Commission- August 29, 2010
The Labor Commission of the Socialist Party USA stands in solidarity
with you, our Spanish comrades and fellow workers, in your call for a
general strike on September 29th, 2010.
We believe that nothing could be more important during this period of
global economic meltdown than strengthening activist connections
between workers at the international level. There are many issues
uniting the international working class right now, including massive
layoffs, wage freezes, major cutbacks in basic services, increased
military spending, and escalating privatization and deregulation – all
of which equal more intense union-busting, worker exploitation,
interpersonal stress, and deterioration of living and working
conditions. We are suffering the consequences of a failed
economic,
political, and social system. It is in our power to transform it
into
one that puts people before profit, and workers and community members
in control of their lives, their cultures, and the collective wealth
that they alone create.
We have been very encouraged and inspired by the militancy of the
working class in Greece and Spain over the past year. Continuing
these
large-scale demonstrations of protest and resistance—with accompanying
demands for radical economic, social, and political change—is crucial
to the growth and political health of our democratic socialist parties
and movement.
We sincerely hope that the working class here in the United States, and
all over the world, will follow your example and take to the streets on
September 29th and beyond.
We look forward to joining you in demanding an end to the devastating
assault on the public sector and organized labor, and an immediate halt
to all the budgetary “austerity measures” that are depriving us of our
right to fully-funded education, health care, affordable housing, mass
transit, and social services. Instead, we should be taxing the
rich,
slashing military spending, creating sustainable jobs, and bringing the
economy under public ownership and worker control.
Only our determination, courage, and persistence—guided by our
democratic socialist principles and program—will bring an end to the
capitalist system and to the exploitation and degradation it represents.
