Solidarity with the Egyptian Working Class!
Passed by the SPUSA National Action Committee- August 27, 2013

In February 2011, the Co-Chairs of the Socialist Party USA issued a statement on behalf of the SPUSA, entitled "Socialism and the Spirit of Tahrir Square".  In it, they congratulated the Egyptian working class for leading the charge to depose longtime president Hosni Mubarak, as well as identified the need to connect the momentum of Tahrir Square to the larger, international struggle for social justice and economic democracy. By this, we mean democratic socialism.

Two years later, the situation for our sisters and brothers of Egypt has deteriorated. The presidential election of 2012, between Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammad Morsi and Mubarak-era prime minister Ahmed Shafik, gave the working class no electoral path to lead their country into a new chapter in its history. The short lived, authoritarian presidency of Morsi only served to cement this fact.

With the Muslim Brotherhood in power, the liberal reformists have chosen to enter into an alliance with the old regime that they worked to overthrow two years ago. This alliance of opportunity between old foes proves that their goal is power for themselves, rather than empowerment for the working class. Now that they have carried out a coup against the Brotherhood and taken power for themselves, the duo has set itself on a course to punish the Brotherhood and its supporters. Despite all of this political upheaval and social unrest, the people of Egypt remain oppressed.

The Socialist Party USA continues to stand in solidarity with the Egyptian working class. We reject the notion that our support must lie with either the Brotherhood or the military and liberal reformists. The power to overthrow the old order and build a new society belongs to the masses, rather than any party or group that intends to rule "on behalf of" them. It is with the masses that our support and solidarity belongs.

It is with the masses that our new society of radical democracy and freedom will be born.

Victory to the Egyptian working class!
