Socialist Party on Health Care
In order to promote a vision of, and program for, free and
comprehensive health care for all, the National Committee of the
Socialist Party USA has initiated a national campaign for socialized
health care.
The
Socialist Party stands for a socialized health care system based on
universal coverage, salaried doctors and health care workers, and
revenue derived from a steeply graduated income tax.

We give
critical support to the demand for the immediate abolition of all
private health insurance companies through the creation of a
single-payer health system. We see single-payer as an important step in
the direction of a fully socialized national health program with full
standard and alternative medical, dental, vision, and mental health
coverage for all. This system would be publicly funded through
progressive taxation and controlled by demo-cratically elected
assemblies of health care workers and patients. The National Health
Program should improve, and replace, Medicare and Medicaid.
We
want a health care system that:
* Emphasizes preventive care.
* Respects patients’ privacy and gives special attention to the needs
of people with physical or mental disabilities.
* Conducts treatment and research unimpaired by sexism, racism, or
homophobia.
* Has comprehensive standard and alternative medical, dental, vision,
and mental health coverage for all.
* Is publicly funded through progressive taxation
* Controlled by democratically elected assemblies of health care
workers and patients.
We
call for:
* Full funding for AIDS research, prevention, and treatment.
* Public ownership and worker and community control of the
pharmaceutical industry.
*
Educational programs to help prevent drug addiction and for voluntary
treatment programs for addicts and alcoholics and for the availability
of free, sterile needles for those still using IV drugs.
*
Reinstatement of funding to community mental health services so that
low-cost and no-cost treatment is available on a voluntary basis, with
clients’ rights respected. (We oppose involuntary incarceration for
treatment without due process). |

8/25/09: Socialist
Party member Zach Gevelinger speaks in Madison "Town Hall"
I got to speak at
the town hall meeting in Darlington, Wisconsin. I questioned him
on why Iraq and Afghanistan can have universal coverage, and why we
cannot. He just said "thanks for coming." I mentioned I was
a member of the SP-USA and SPWI, which garnered a "hell yeah!" and a
"whoooo!". Afterwards the meeting, I got cheers by a few goers
for doing a good job and one lady said it was "nice to meet a full
blooded socialist." One man came up to me and said "we don't need
your socialist bullshit in this country." And I respectfully retorted
"You're right sir, capitalism is doing wonders."
